A Scottish Basket-Hilted Backsword
The Hilt In The Manner Of John Simpson The Younger Glasgow, Early 18th Century

With tapering blade, probably by Samuel Harvey of Birmingham, double-edged towards the point and fullered over its entire length on each side with a narrow fuller bordering it along the back, the forte with traces of incised crowned 'GR' monogram on each side, iron guard of line engraved fluted bars of rectangular section involving fretted incised panels pierced with circles and stylised hearts, the main panel pierced with a cross centred on a saltire, the side panels each with 'ram's horn' terminal pierced with a stylised heart between, and with oval aperture for the reins, fluted fore-guards, small scrolled wrist-guard, fluted bun-shaped pommel with separate button, and spirally-grooved fishskin-covered grip bound with twisted copper wire (some wear and minor rust patination overall)
