Mid-18th Century, Probably German
With tapering blade (minor rust patination) double-edged towards the point and etched and gilt within the fuller over most of its length on each side with hounds pursuing stags, boars and hares, the forte with etched and gilt foliate decoration on both sides, brass hilt (shell-guard missing) comprising quillon-block cast and chased with a grotesque mask on one side and with foliage on the other, rear quillon with boar's head terminal, faceted knuckle-guard swelling and engraved with foliage on both sides at the centre, the top with monster-head terminal fitting into a sleeve on the pommel-cap, the latter with foliate border and a boar's mask on top, and wooden grip covered in rayskin, in original wood-lined leather scabbard with locket and chape en suite with the hilt, the former engraved with a running stag in a landscape on one side and with pockets for the by-knife and fork, each with handle en suite with the grip
