A Spanish Left-Hand Dagger
Late 17th Century

With slender tapering blade of diamond section, broad notched and cusped ricasso struck with a bird's head mark and punched with foliage on each side (some pitting), one side hollowed for the thumb and punched with a cross, the other with a punched sacred 'IHS', the bottom pierced with three brass-lined holes, the middle one centred on a star, and with three holes on either side for sword-breaking, hilt comprising guard of triangular form finely engraved with foliage, straight quillons with turned button terminals, later punched compressed spherical pommel with button finial, and wooden grip bound with copper and steel wire
