A Flintlock Blunderbuss
The Lock By John Fowell Of London, Late 17th Century

With two-stage russet barrel flared at the muzzle, octagonal breech becoming polygonal and deeply struck with maker's mark, probably of Samuel Love, plain tang, signed border engraved rounded lock decorated with strawberry foliage, 19th century figured full stock, brass mounts comprising butt-plate, late 17th century trigger-guard with moulded finial and engraved with strawberry foliage on the bow, turned baluster ramrod-pipe, and brass-capped wooden ramrod with iron worm, London proof marks

Footnotes

John Fowell was free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1687 and is recorded at Eade Street, St. Giles-in-the-Fields in 1714. He was succeeded by Samuel Love at the same address around 1730
