A Cased 40-Bore Air Rifle And Gun

With browned turn-off twist octagonal leaf-sighted barrel rifled with seven grooves, threaded breech with platinum line and oval platinum-lined maker's stamp, signed case-hardened border engraved action decorated with martial trophies and foliage, foliate engraved cocking-lever with roller bearing on the blued external mainspring, border engraved trigger-guard decorated with foliage, iron butt reservoir covered in fishskin (minor damage and repairs) and signed around the mount, figured fore-end (split) with silver fore-end cap, original brass-tipped ramrod, and some original finish: in original relined and refitted mahogany case (keyhole escutcheon missing) with original signed smooth-bore barrel en suite, browned pump with foot-plate, blued main-spring, reservoir and pump wrenches, bullet mould, and later spare cocking-lever, the exterior of the lid with flush-fitting brass carrying-handle

Offered with a handwritten letter dated 27 August 1869 signed by Richard Jackson and reading: '...The airgun is a first rate one, and in perfect order, and will kill Rabbits at 60 yards. The whole cause of its want of power in not having sufficient air pumped into the butt, but air gun pumping is something more than exercise in this hot weather.'
