A 55-Bore Air Rifle
By John Probin & Co., Lisle Street, London, Circa 1830

With rebrowned turn-off sighted polygroove rifled barrel engraved with a starburst at the breech, border engraved action signed in full and decorated with a gamebird flying over a tree in a landscape on one side, and with gamebirds in a landscape on the other, one perched in a tree, pierced foliate scroll engraved cocking-lever (perhaps an old working replacement), circular loading aperture with transverse breech-block engraved with a starburst and operated by a sprung tap, figured butt with chequered grip (repairs), later fore-end, foliate scroll engraved iron butt-plate and scroll trigger-guard (both with some wear and rust patination), vacant white-metal escutcheon, spherical iron reservoir with knurled medial band, and later ramrod (ramrod-pipes replaced); together with a contemporary brass-mounted iron pump with later turned swelling wooden handles (2)
