A Fine Cased Pair Of French 50-Bore Flintlock Box-Lock Pocket Pistols
By Boutet, Directeur Artiste, Manu fre. A Versailles, Circa 1800

With bright turn-off barrels each with chamfered muzzle, engraved with a decorative band around the muzzle, and with a foliate band at the breech, the latter signed beneath and numbered '1' and '2' respectively, bright border engraved actions each inscribed 'Manufre' and 'A Versailles' over the sides and decorated with a caduceus on the tang, distinctive cocks (one repaired) each engraved with a dolphin on both sides, folding triggers each engraved with a garland issuing from a dog's mask, and figured rounded butts with chequered panels on each side: in later fitted brass-mounted wooden case veneered in burr walnut and lined in red leather with tooled and gilt borders with accessories, some probably original, comprising combined bullet mould and barrel-key, oil bottle, mallet, pricker, brass-mounted powder-flask with bag-shaped body covered in green leather tooled and gilt with foliage around the top, and turnscrew, the interior of the lid lined in green leather with tooled and gilt foliate borders, the exterior with rectangular vacant brass escutcheon
