A Rare Viennese 54-Bore Breech-Loading Air Gun
By Joseph Schembor In Wien, Early 19th Century

With russet octagonal sighted barrel engraved with an arrow at the fore-sight, and indistinctly signed along the top flat at the breech, pivoting up for loading against a spring and retained by a sprung catch in front of the trigger-guard, foliate engraved breech with later brass 'cartridge', border engraved brass action decorated with foliage, shaped border engraved lock and side-plate, the former decorated with a running fox in a landscape, foliage and a starburst, the latter en suite and with a gundog and gamebird in a landscape, cocking-lever engraved with a monster's head and foliage, partly chequered figured fore-stock (minor splits), brass trigger-guard with foliate urn-shaped finial and engraved with a sporting trophy on the bow, detachable tapering cylindrical butt reservoir covered in black leather (some wear), engraved brass ramrod-pipes, and brass-tipped ramrod; together with a modern brass-mounted pump (2)
