Late 16th Century, Probably Milanese
Of bright iron, with heavy rounded one-piece skull with low comb (rust holed on one side) pierced with two small and one larger hole at a later date, bluntly pointed viser with hooked projection beneath, partly roped and formed centrally en suite with the comb above horizontal sights, pivoted at the same points as the upper- and lower-bevors (one bolt replaced, the other missing), the former prow-shaped, pierced on the left for a lifting-peg (missing) and on the right with a circular arrangement of round and keyhole-shaped breaths, two pierced holes above and a larger single hole beneath, probably for a spring-catch (missing), the latter shaped to the chin and with later hook catch on the right, the lower edges with a line of holes for lining rivets (missing) and with turning joint intended to engage over a gorget, finely decorated overall in the Pisan manner with broad bands of foliated strapwork knots against a granular ground and between borders of ropework, and retaining faint traces of original gilding in places (some wear overall, two areas of pitting on one side): on later circular wooden stand (2)
