A Pair Of German Mitten Gauntlets
Mid-Late 16th Century

Of bright iron, each with flared cuff made in two pieces, each embossed with three converging ridges and with recessed boldly roped border with a row of dome-headed rivets, five articulated metacarpal plates with medial ridge and cusped upper edge, the top plate plain and embossed over the ulna, prominently roped knuckle-plate and six overlapping finger plates en suite, the last with roped border, hinged three plate thumb defences en suite, domed iron rivets throughout, and both with incised assembly marks and now painted orange inside (some areas of pitting) (2)
