A Saxon Miner's Guild Axe
18th Century

With russet iron head comprising off-set angular blade rising to a triangular point with brass finial, pierced with a slipped trefoil and with two groups of three circular holes, and socket with chequered block-shaped peen, on original half formed of sections of polished staghorn engraved with blackened figures of miners at work, a crucifixion scene at the top, and the arms of Saxony at the hoof-shaped bottom, all within ovals and borders of foliage, all the scenes with inscriptions in old German
