Albert de Lande Long (1844-1914)
Born in Ipswich, the son of a solicitor, he moved to Stockton-on-Tees and in 1875, together with Arthur Dorman, acquired the West Marsh Iron Works in Middlesborough and founded the steel-making firm Dorman Long, a company which later became famous for their role in the building of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Tyne Bridge. He also served as Justice of the Peace. In his private life, he was a keen rower, winning several prizes including the Wingfield Sculls in 1869 and 1870. He died at his estate of Crosby Cote, Northallerton, aged 69
