The action incorporating J. Purdey thumb-hole underlever patent no. 1104 of 2nd May 1863, island backlocks (hammers and strikers missing) with best foliate-scroll engraving, percussion fences, replacement stock, the damascus barrels (dented, slightly loose on action) with game-rib engraved J. Purdey, 314½ Oxford Street, London

The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was completed in 1868 for Mr. J.H. Arkwright

John Hungerford Arkwright, MA JP DL (1833-1905)
The great-grandson of the famous industrialist Sir Richard Arkwright, he was educated at Oxford. His father purchased Hampton Court Estate near Leominster in Herefordshire, previously the property of the Earls of Essex, and went on to own two of the local mills. He served as High Sheriff of Herefordshire in 1862 and married Charlotte Davenport four years later. Shortly after his death the Leominster lands of his estate were sold off at auction after his eldest son, the Conservative politician John Stanhope Arkwright, moved to Kinsham Court near Presteigne
