According to Patrick Unsworth, Purdey's produced their first breech-loading gun in late 1857, no. 5305, but it was not sold until 1864. The first to be sold was gun no. 5462, on May 3rd 1858. According to Appendix 3, this gun would appear to be amongst the first twenty breech-loaders sold by Purdey's
