The Skull Late 16th Century
Of bright steel, with heavy rounded one-piece skull rising to a low roped comb and fitted with iron plume-holder at the rear, bluntly-pointed visor with stepped vision-slit divided at its centre above numerous circular breaths, short lifting-peg fitting into the upper-bevor, the latter pierced with five diagonal slots on each side, lower-bevor shaped to the chin and pivoting at the same points as the visor and upper-bevor, and retained at its base by a single spring-catch on the right side, and single neck-plate at front and rear, each with plain open turn, decorated at a later date with etched bands and borders of foliated scrollwork involving birds, hares, and cornucopiae, all against a dotted ground (some wear), and with iron rivets throughout
