A Decorative Circular Cast-Iron Pageant Shield In 'Louvre School' Mid-16th Century Style After The Original In The Museé De L'Armée, Paris

Of convex form with slightly dished rim, the former decorated on the outside with fruiting foliage inhabited by two crabs between satyrs playing bagpipes, addorsed winged female grotesques beneath, and a female mask above, the remaining surfaces involving trophies of arms suspended from horned grotesque masks, cherubs, some blowing horns, jugs of foliage suspended from the beaks of swans, serpents and butterflies, all within borders of linked ovals and centred on a turned spike of tapering octagonal section, its socle decorated en suite, the latter with pairs of crabs, trophies of arms, winged grotesque masks and suspended fruit, all between satyrs and female demi-figures, the spaces between with foliate ovals, and with roped outer edge and dome-headed imitation rivets, the interior with indistinct Italian circular maker's mark

The original of this shield formed part of 'l'ensemble à la chimère' (preserved in the Musée de l'Armée, inv. no. J.97) by tradition offered as a wedding gift to the Duke of Alba. A related shield is in the Wallace Collection (A 320)
