A Very Rare American 'U.S. Stadia' Silver Prize Rangefinder
By Geo. W. Simons & Bro. Manf.rd Phila. And Supplied To Frankford Arsenal, Circa 1860

Of flat rectangular form rounded at each end and engraved with foliage, one side engraved 'U.S.' above 'Stadia' at the top and stamped 'Frankford Arsenal' at the bottom, calibrated from '100' to '1000' yards and inscribed 'Infantry 70 . 86 in.', the other side with maker's details at the bottom, similarly calibrated and inscribed 'Cavalry 98 . 43 in.', foliate engraved pierced sliding aperture with blued retaining screws and carrying its original red cord plumb-line, foliate engraved suspension mount with silver chain terminating in a bud-shaped T-bar, and in fine condition
13.5 cm.

Footnotes

First issued as a prize for marksmanship in 1858 these stadia were awarded in brass and silver. The brass examples being for the highest scoring company marksman and the silver awarded by the regimental colonel to the overall winner of the regiment. All were awarded on an annual basis and were worn as part of the recipients uniform. See William K. Emerson, Marksmanship in the U.S. Army ..., 2004, pp. 8-9
