Footnotes

Provenance:
John Wallace Collection

Probably made by a member of the Biggar (or Biggart) family of cutlers of Kilmaurs, as the cutler's mark is found on cutlery and at least one sword (Glasgow Museum, inv. no. A728) bearing silver marks attributed to them. Similar pieces of cutlery have been sold in recent years by Wooley & Wallis, Salisbury, 20 April 2004 (lot 494), 31 January 2007 (lot 132), and 28 January 2009 (lot 580)

The cutlery industry at Kilmaurs is believed to have ceased by the middle of the eighteenth century

See John Wallace, Scottish Swords and Dirks, no. 78; and Philip S. Lankester, 'Notes on some Scottish silver-mounted swords and related swords', J.A.A.S., vol. XIV, no. 5 (march 1994), pp. 288-289
