A Spontoon, And A Sergeant's Spontoon
The First 18th Century, The Last Early 19th Century

The first with broad slightly hollowed tapering blade, swelling out at the base, cusped around the border and with decorative piercings forming a central cross, straight faceted side lugs each springing from a moulding and with rounded recurved terminals, socket of tapering octagonal section with three moulded bands, and long side-straps (patinated black overall), on original wooden staff of circular section with conical steel shoe; the second with threaded leaf-shaped blade of flattened diamond section on tapering circular socket pierced through by the axe-blade with hooked projections and broad beak-shaped fluke, the former engraved 'Essex' and the latter 'S/1', and with integral side-straps, on original wooden staff of circular section (some wear and surface rust) (2)
