A Rare Saxon Silver-Mounted Hunting Trousse (Waidpraxe)
Mid-17th Century, Unidentified Silver Maker's Marks

Comprising an associated cleaver, and five extra pieces, the cleaver with broad blade double-edged at the point, cut with a fuller along the back on one side, and with two bladesmith's marks inlaid in copper on the other, the grip formed from the tang sandwiched between two iron basal mounts with linear engraved borders and diagonally fluted lobed rear quillon, a side-ring with moulded finial on the outside, beaked pommel with ebony grip-scales secured by four transverse iron pins each with domed silver head, the extra pieces comprising three knives each with copper-inlaid maker's mark, a fork and a bodkin, each with beaked silver pommel engraved with hatched scrolling foliage, three involving a vacant shield-shaped cartouche on one side, one engraved with an armorial, and all with pinned ebony grip-scales, in leather-covered scabbard (leather damaged and probably later) with silver mount, the latter with pierced Saxon arms within an engraved wreath at the top (the plate pierced for the extra pieces a later replacement), medial diagonal band on the outside with cusped borders, and foliate engraved chape with turned and moulded finial, the back with a diagonal loop for suspension
