Japanese For The European Market, Mid-18th Century
With tapering blade of flattened oval section cut with two deep fullers on each side of the forte pierced with a series of small linked rectangles and circles, characteristic blackened hilt comprising boat-shell guard, quillons with recurved tips, arms, knuckle-guard screwed to the globular pommel, the latter with button finial, and swelling grip, all decorated with gilt rocailles and foliage in low relief against a finely punched ground (some surface wear to gilding)
