A 54-Bore Flintlock Box-Lock Pistol
By Barbar, Probably James 1, London, Circa 1765

With three-stage turn-off cannon barrel, action signed on an engraved foliated scroll against a chiselled background on each side, ring-neck cock and steel en suite, sliding trigger-guard safety-catch with a flower-head in a diamond-shaped panel on the bow, and figured flat-sided butt inlaid with silver wire foliage and rocailles heightened with silver pins (some wire missing, some rust patination overall), Tower private proof marks

James 1 Barbar, son of Louis 1, was elected Master of the Gunmakers' Company in 1742. He was appointed Gentleman Armourer to George II in 1741 and died in 1773
