A Cased Pair Of 25-Bore Percussion Duelling Pistols
By H.W. Mortimer, London, Gun Maker To His Majesty, Circa 1785-90

Converted from flintlock, with slightly swamped octagonal barrels each signed in full along the top flat and with silver fore-sight, foliate engraved tangs each incorporating a back-sight, signed border engraved flat bevelled locks decorated with scrollwork and with banners on the stepped tails, engraved safety-catches, figured half-stocks (reduced from full) with chequered rounded butts, each pommel carved with radiating ribs, steel trigger-guards each with urn-shaped finial filled with fruit and engraved with a martial trophy on the bow partly beneath an applied spur, set triggers, turned ramrod-pipes (one detached, one missing), horn fore-end caps, and later brass-tipped ramrods (steel parts with some rust patination): in relined and refitted mahogany case, possibly original, with some accessories including red leather-covered three-way flask (cut-off spring incomplete, leather stained and rust damaged), the exterior of the lid (one catch missing) with flush-fitting brass carrying handle, London proof marks
