A Cased Irish 40-Bore Percussion Travelling Pistol
By James Calderwood, Dublin, Circa 1845

With etched twist sighted barrel engraved 'Dublin' in the sighting groove, breech engraved with a starburst in the sighting groove, blued foliate engraved tang grooved for sighting, blued signed border engraved lock decorated with scrolling foliage, case-hardened dolphin hammer en suite with three bents, varnished figured full stock with chequered rounded butt, the latter with cavities for caps and balls covered by a blued border engraved hinged extension from the barrel tang, silver butt-cap, blued trigger-guard with pineapple finial and engraved with foliage on the bow, stirrup ramrod, and virtually all its original finish: in original lined and fitted mahogany case for a pair of pistols with some accessories including small brass-mounted flask with bag-shaped body, the interior of the lid with maker's trade label (lid escutcheon missing)
