With russet two-stage barrel retained by two later spring-held slotted barrel bands and inlaid with gold trefoils on the top flats of the octagonal breech at the girdle, silver spider fore-sight between gold trefoils, octagonal breech inscribed in gold 'En. Madrid:.', and struck with the maker's two punzónes (one Neue Støckel 8398), one lined in gold, below three gold-lined marks and a cross between five gold-inlaid stars, gold-inlaid touch-hole, tang lightly engraved with foliage, border engraved flat bevelled lock struck with further copper-lined maker's punzón above 'Ivan Santos', decorated with a bow and quiver of arrows below the pan, and with a martial trophy on the stepped tail, foliate engraved cock (top jaw and screw old replacements) and steel, German figured full stock (some chips along each side of the fore-stock) carved with rocailles and foliage behind the barrel tang, fluted butt recessed for the cheek, iron mounts pierced and engraved with foliage comprising side-nail plates, one involving a monster, heel-plate, and trigger-guard finial with engraved strap extending along the integral wooden trigger-guard with rounded spur, and dark horn fore-end cap (chipped, ramrod missing)

Diego Ventura was a student of Alonso Martínez. According to Soler (in his Compendio histórico de los arcabuceros de Madrid) he lived to 'a very advanced age'. He was appointed gunsmith to Carlos III in 1760 but died two years later. He taught Benito San Martín
