Footnotes

Pedro II was the last Emperor of Brazil. He ruled for fifty-eight years and held widespread regard around the world for his success in creating a stable and peaceful country. His reign was characterised by a much more liberal political approach than many of Brazil's neighbours, and was a period of increasing prosperity for the country, along with the abolition of the slave trade, a representative political system and civilian control of the military. He was also a supporter of free speech, which allowed the growth of a republican movement, something which he was not willing to prevent. Failing health required a trip to Europe in 1887, and whilst there he learnt that the abolition of slavery had been passed into law. Upon his return a year later, he was welcomed home by mass demonstrations of affection, however the abolition of slavery made enemies of the coffee plantation owners, who formed the basis of economic power, and who began to pressure the military to overthrow the Emperor. In late 1889 he became the victim of a coup d'etat, and was sent into exile, dying in Paris two years later
