Footnotes
Provenance:
Ex Marzoli Collection
The pommel (Oakeshott Type A) is one that has been found in Hungarian graves datable to circa 1000, and that remained in use until the 12th century. Quillons of similar form (Oakeshott Style I) are found in Viking graves of the 10th century and were refered to by the Vikings as 'Gaddhjalt' (spike-hilt).
