A Fine German Or Austrian Serving Fork
Dated 1680

With two sharply tapering tines each with rounded outer edge, faceted partly punched and gilt moulding at the top with slender roped silver medial border beneath an integral octagonal mount, the latter encrusted with silver human masks, leaves and trefoils against a punched and gilt ground within roped silver borders, flat-side handle of tapering octagonal section inlaid along each side with silver wire foliage and pointillé fruit coloured in pigments of red and green, the rounded pommel set with a silver roundel on each side, and the edge inscribed in inlaid silver wire 'HJM . MEL . UND . ER . DEN . GE . MACHT . HAT . 1680'
