18th/19th Century
The first Japanese for the European market, with single-edged blade stamped with cutler's mark on one side, gilt mount over each side of the base of the blade with faceted baluster moulding above, and gilt grip of faceted tapering circular section chased along each side with a panel of prunus inhabited by birds, and along the top and bottom with scrolling foliage, small button finial, and much of its original gilding, in later wooden scabbard covered in brown leather; the second with single-edged blade, and silver grip of tapering oval section embossed with decorative bands including waterfowl and rabbits, in its green-stained shagreen-covered scabbard with foliate engraved silver locket (chape missing), Amsterdam silver marks; the third handachi, the brass hilt and scabbard decorated with Tokugawa mon; the fourth with single-edged blade incised with characters along the back on one side, the blackened hilt and white-metal mounted scabbard decorated overall with numerous gold-inlaid characters; the last of characteristic form, mounted in silver, and retaining its green suspension cord (5)
