A Sergeant's Spontoon Of The 4th (King's Own) Regiment Of Foot
Early 19th Century

With tapering leaf-shaped blade of flattened diamond section threaded onto a socket of tapering circular section with two ring mouldings, separate side-lugs of slender circular section with button terminals, and integral side-straps, one engraved 'S4-Regt. F/4', on original wooden staff (shortened) of tapering circular section (some pitting)

Footnotes

The 4th (King's Own) regiment was formed in 1751 from the 2nd Tangier Regiment of Foot. During the Napoleonic Wars the regiment saw action at Carunna, Badajoz, Salamanca, Vittoria, San Sebastian, Nive, in the Peninsula, at Bladensburg and at Waterloo
