A Fine Silesian Wheel-Lock Tschinke Of Small Bore
Mid-17th Century

With swamped octagonal sighted barrel rifled with eight grooves, retaining much of its original blueing and decorated with punched and gilt designs of scrolling foliage at the muzzle, mid-section and breech, long tang en suite, characteristic foliate engraved lock with brass plate over the wheel-bracket engraved with guilloche, and brass plate over the rear of the chiselled mainspring engraved with foliage, the last with button catch for setting the sear, engraved sliding pan-cover with release button, flash-guard engraved with a crouching feline monster, and pierced cock engraved with a winged monster and foliage, fruitwood full stock profusely inlaid with horn scrolls and pellets inhabited by hounds, hares and pairs of grotesques, a prone stag and bird on the underside, a profile grotesque head on either side of the barrel tang, a vacant mother-of-pearl oval between horn monsters on one side of the butt, and on the cheek-piece with a further vacant mother-of-pearl oval between demi-figures each playing a harp, a winged cherub's head above, enriched overall with engraved mother-of-pearl ball-flowers and a squirrel, sliding patch-box cover en suite, white horn butt-plate engraved with a flower, iron button and trigger-guard, the latter indented for the fingers, foliate engraved horn ramrod-pipes and fore-end cap, iron ramrod, probably original, and in fine condition
