A Very Fine Flemish Swept-Hilt Rapier With Silver-Covered Hilt
Circa 1630

With long slender blade of stiff diamond section with blunt flattened tip and narrow fuller running almost full length on each side and stamped 'Fransisco Ruiz in Toledo', rectangular ricasso struck on each side with a crowned 'R' and a crowned 'F', iron hilt of slender bars with diagonally recurved quillons, two oval guards filled with plates pierced with interlaced strapwork and each surmounted by two bars swelling at the centre, the upper one joined to the knuckle-guard by a curved bar, and vertically fluted quillon-block and tall oviform pommel, the latter with button of octagonal section, the knuckle-guard screwed to the pommel, the original grip bound with twisted silver wire, the hilt retaining most of its original finish throughout
