William Brodie, Scottish (1825-1881)
A 19th century white marble bust of an old woman,

the figure wearing a shawl over her head and shoulders, the shawl incised with a geometric pattern, a brooch to her neck, signed W.S.BRODIE. RSA Sc 1870 to back of bust, raised on a white marble waisted socle base, 46cm wide, 74cm high (18in wide, 29in high)

Footnotes

William Brodie began his working life as an apprentice to a plumber in Aberdeen, he became interested in sculpture and began to model small medallion portraits. On moving to Edinburgh he studied at the Trustees School of Design in Edinburgh. He travelled to Rome in 1853 and studied under Laurence Macdonald. He established a successful studio specializing in portrait busts, public monuments and architectural sculpture. He also provided Edinburgh's cemeteries with some of their finest monuments and portrait busts. He exhibited his work at both the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy in London.
