Attributed to Workshop of Michel Mann
A Nuremberg steel miniature casket circa 1600

the front back and sides finely engraved with figures of courtly musicians amongst scrolling foliage, the top engraved with strapwork, the interior with the original lock shooting two bolts with engraved and blued decoration, gilt border possibly later, 13.5cm wide, 8cm deep, 7cm high (5in wide, 3in deep, 2.5in high)

Footnotes

This belongs to a group of caskets of closely similar design and decoration, many of which bear the signature of either Michel or Conrad Mann. Nothing appears to be recorded about the latter, but the similarity of his signed work to that of Michel's suggests that they worked together. Michel was born in Augsburg and trained in Nuremberg, where he died circa 1630.
