Footnotes
This model is based on a painting of the same subject by Jean-Baptiste Regnault. Exhibited at the Paris salon of 1783 the work achieved great acclaim and influenced sculptors and painters alike. The bronze model has now been attributed by Douglas Lewis to the important French sculptor François Rude, and was probably produced in the early stages of his career.
