Footnotes
Cumberworth studied under Pradier from 1829 to 1836. By the 1830s he had rejected the Neo-Classical style favoured by his master and by the Salon for the Romanticism typified by the work of Feuchere and Barre. Because of this he was one of the first sculptors to produce small statuettes for commercial purposes rather than large models to exhibit at the salon. These statuettes were edited by numerous bronze foundries of Paris as well as in Parian ware by Copeland. The present model was cast in numerous sizes by the Susse foundry.
