Footnotes
Having studied under Jouffroy, Gaudez began exhibiting at the Salon in 1864. He was one of the best known French sculptors of the later 19th century, partly because of his prolific output, but also because of his meticulously detailed renderings.
This model was cast in at least three sizes, 51.5cm high, 74cm high and 105cm high. A 105cm high (the same size as the present lot) casting is in the Clermont-Ferrand museum.
