Footnotes
Bartolini was commissioned to produce his group of Charity Educating Children in 1818 by Leopold II Grand Duke of Tuscany for the villa of Poggio Imperiale, Florence. The plaster model was not finished until 1824, by which time the design had already achieved such fame that it was decided to display the marble in the Galleria Palatina of the Pitti Palace where it could be admired by visitors from all over Europe. It was installed there in 1836 and remains there today.
The original marble is illustrated on page 296 of The Dictionary of Art, Grove, London 1996.
