Footnotes

The sofa is a copy of an early George III giltwood sofa, probably executed by John Linnell, which was acquired by the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1929 (see www.philamuseum.org/collections/permanent/42419.html?mulR=8288). The design is based on two anonymous drawings of circa 1762, now in the Soane Museum, which were probably sketched by the architect Robert Adam adapting earlier designs by Linnell. The Philadelphia Museum sofa is illustrated in the Dictionary of English Furniture, rev. ed, London, 1964, p. 456, fig. 45. An almost identical sofa, and possibly the inspiration for Maple and Co, was published in Francis Lenygon, The Decoration and Furniture of English Mansions During the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, London, 1909. For a full discussion of the design see Eileen Harris, The Furniture of Robert Adam, London, 1963, pp.89-91, figs. 98- 100.
