A fine gold lacquer kamuridana (cosmetic display shelf)

Meiji Period
The elegant rectangular two-shelved table with slender frame is reticulated on both sides in the form of a hanabishi pattern and supported on four trefoil feet, lavishly decorated in a variety of maki-e techniques with six aerial views of different chapters, demarcated by conventional clouds, from the 'Tales of Genji', the top shelf decorated with scenes from left to right of Akashi (chapter 4), Matsukaze (chapter 18) and the Suetsumuhana (chapter 6) whilst the bottom shelf is embellished with scenes from Utsusemi (chapter 3), Yomogiu (chapter 15) and possibly kagero (chapter 52), the legs, sides and thinner borders exquisitely lacquered with assorted floral, auspicious and geometric motifs including maple leaves, takaramono, chidori, broken rinzu patterns, kikumon, stylised butteflies and cranes holding sprigs of pine; applied throughout with silvered-metal fittings engraved with hollyhocks and foliage, unsigned with double wood storage boxes. 48.5cm x 74.5cm x 38.5cm (19 1/16in x 29¼in x 15 1/8in).
