Momoyama Period, early 17th century
Decorated in typical Nanban style in toned gold hiramakie with inlaid raden, the top separated into four sections by lozenge-shaped patterns with stylised birds flying amidst Chinese bellflowers and other seasonal flowers, the edges of the top with a band of shippo-tsunagi inlaid in mother-of-pearl, the legs and sides of the base with fruiting vine tendrils, all reserved on a black lacquer ground; with wood storage box. 35.8cm x 37.8cm x 25.5cm (14in x 14¾in x 10in). Accompanied with a copy of a certificate issued by the Kyoto National Museum which indicates that the stand was originally donated to the Museum in Showa 56 (1981).
Compare with an almost identical design decorating the top of a large rectangular table in the collection of the Yamato Bunkakan Museum in Nara, exhibited at the Sakai City Museum, Nanban shikki (Nanban lacquer), Exhibition Catalogue, Osaka, 1983, p.54, pl.55.
