A Kashan lustre moulded pottery Cockerel Head Ewer
Persia, 13th Century

with pear-shaped body and narrow neck with bulb, the top in the form of a stylised cockerel head, the beak with an aperture to either side, the strap-handle with raised thumb-piece, on a short slightly spread foot, decorated in brown lustre, the body divided into a frieze of drop-shaped panels, alternately filled with palmette-scrolls and a smaller scrolling foliate design, each with a moulded design, possibly in the form of a seated human figure
