An unusual Seljuk monochrome pottery Figural Vessel
Persia, 12th Century

depicting the heads and front legs of two elephants back to back with a large circular aperture between and a human figure on each side, the elephant with applied discs for ears and applied decorative ornament on the elephants, all standing on a rectangular platform base with crenellated edge, all under a turquoise glaze
15.9 x 8 x 10 cm.

Provenance: Formerly in the collection of P Abrami in the late 1940s.

The depiction of the elephants can be compared to those on the base of a ceramic lampstand of the same period that was sold recently at Sotheby's (Sotheby's, Arts of the Islamic World, 14th April 2010, Lot 128).
