A carved black and red lacquer rectangular tray

Jiaqing
Carved in high relief through the black lacquer to reveal the red lacquer ground, depicting a pair of scholars seated on rocks below overhanging gnarled pine and wutong trees, deep in conversation, observed by a third seated scholar and approached by two further scholars and their attendant, carrying a qin, the four sides carved with shaped cartouches enclosing blossoming flowers and rockwork, against scrolling lotus ground, the underside carved with further blossoming flowers and rockwork, all raised on four short feet.
