A carved cameo agate snuff bottle

18th/19th century
The well-hollowed bottle of flattened square form with concave lip and slightly convex oval foot surrounded by a flat foot rim, carved on one side with a cameo design of a horse tethered to a post. 6.4cm (2½in) high.

Footnotes

The subject matter of a horse tied to a post symbolises unrealised potential and would have been ideally suited as a gift for one who has recently qualified as an official. Compare two agate snuff bottles in the Bloch collection illustrating the same subject, see H.Moss, V.Graham, K.B.Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, Vol.2, Hong Kong, 1998, nos.302 and 303.
