An unusual spinach jade carving of a lady in a chariot

19th century
Carved as a lady, possibly Xiwangmu, Queen Mother of the West, seated in a chariot with rotating wheels, holding an open book in her right hand, her hair tied in a high chignon surmounted by a phoenix headdress, the chariot pushed by a striding male attendant, the deep green stone with mottled yellow and russet inclusions. 14.5cm (5¾in) high.

Footnotes

Provenance: Sydney L. Moss Ltd., London

The present jade carving would appear to represent Xiwangmu, Queen Mother of the West. Whilst this subject matter is illustrated on porcelain, it is very rare to be represented in jade.
