Footnotes

Provenance: an English private collection

Wucai dishes with this decoration are rare. This design is seen on Jiajing period dishes and vases. Compare a Jiajing mark and of the period blue and white dish, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Blue and White Porcelain with Underglaze Red (II), Hong Kong, 2000, pl.128. See also a wucai 'fish' jar, Jiajing mark and of the period, from the Palmer collection, sold in these rooms on 14 May 2009, lot 54.

Kangxi dishes of this design bear either six-character Kangxi marks, 'zai chuan zhi le' (Discovering joy in the river) marks, or the apocryphal Jiajing six-character mark as on the present lot. A similar pair with apocryphal Jiajing marks was sold at Christie's Hong Kong on 27 May 2008, lot 1758.
