Footnotes
Provenance: Sydney L. Moss Ltd., London
Mughal-style jade chrysanthemum dishes of this form and quality are exceptionally rare. The carving of the dish in a rectangular form as well as the sides carved as overlapping lappets rather than a single lappet border are a testament to jade craftsmanship at its zenith. Whilst circular jade chrysanthemum dishes are known from the Qing Court Collection, no other rectangular dish appears to have been published; see two circular jade chrysanthemum dishes, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jadeware (II), Beijing, 2008, pls.268 and 269. Compare also a fine white jade waterpot carved with similar radiating petals growing from a leafy stem to the base, illustrated in Exquisite Beauty: Islamic Jades, Taipei, 2007, Catalogue no.260.
