The impressive bowl well enamelled on the interior with five large fish and many smaller ones swimming amidst aquatic plants, the globular exterior walls decorated with two main shaped cartouches enclosing a garden with a phoenix perched on rockwork amidst peony, magnolia, aster, lingzhi fungus and other flowers, interrupted by the two biscuit Buddhist lion-mask handles atop two smaller cartouches with peony and lotus sprays, all reserved on a dense foliate diaper ground with floral sprays, with borders of butterflies interspersed with floral sprays above the foot and on the waisted neck, rising to the flat everted rim with cartouches enclosing landscape scenes, butterflies and floral sprays reserved on a honeycomb diaper ground, the splayed foot with a floral spray, wood stand.

Compare a similar fishbowl from Wallington, Northumberland, illustrated in Treasures from the National Trust, 2007, where the fishbowl is dated as circa 1745 and it is noted that it can be traced back as early as 1767.
