A schist relief, possibly of the 'Great Departure of Prince Siddhartha'

Gandhara, 2nd-3rd century AD
The rectangular stone deeply carved with a figural scene illustrating the departure of Prince Siddhartha from the Palace, the Prince is shown mounted on a horse before an archer, a lady and two men, wood stand. 30.6cm (12in) wide (2).

Provenance: a Swiss private collection, acquired during the collector's stay in Pakistan as a Swiss diplomat (1968-1972), and thence by descent.

The scene in the present lot possibly illustrates the last departure of Prince Siddhartha from the Palace. The Prince ventured out of the Palace several times, learning about old age, sickness, death, suffering and the way to enlightement. Finding his path, the Prince decided to leave his life of luxury and search for truth.
